In a startling turn of events, both Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) found themselves in Israel over the weekend as extremist group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on the country’s border with Gaza. Here’s a closer look at their experiences and responses to the crisis.

Lawmakers Caught in the Crossfire

As Hamas rockets rained down on Israel, Rep. Dan Goldman and his family were in Israel for a Bar Mitzvah. Amid the chaos, they sought shelter from the rocket fire in their hotel’s interior stairwell until it was safe to leave for New York.

Similarly, Sen. Cory Booker had arrived in Israel ahead of a summit on the Abraham Accords, where he was scheduled to speak. When the attacks occurred, Booker and his staff found themselves in Jerusalem and took shelter for their safety.

Voices of Support and Condemnation

Both congressmen turned to social media to express their views on the situation. Rep. Goldman stressed the importance of replenishing and expanding the Iron Dome, Israel’s rocket defense system. He called for swift action, urging Congress to pass emergency legislation to assist Israel in defending itself.

Sen. Booker vehemently condemned Hamas’ actions, describing them as “horrific acts of violence, kidnapping, and terror” that targeted Israeli families, children, and civilians across the nation. He stood in solidarity with the people of Israel and the families affected by the violence.

A Crisis Unfolds

The attack on Saturday morning took Israeli forces by surprise, resulting in casualties and kidnappings, including civilians. The situation remains fluid, with global leaders closely monitoring developments in the region.
