The pro-Palestinian movement in the U.S. faces significant challenges as Donald Trump and Republicans take control of Washington, posing threats to advocacy efforts.

Republican Leadership Intensifies Scrutiny

Pro-Palestinian activists are bracing for a political environment increasingly hostile to their cause. Republican lawmakers have pushed measures like a bill to revoke the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed “terrorist-supporting.” This legislation has raised fears about chilling free speech and political activism.

Beth Miller, political director for Jewish Voice for Peace Action, highlighted the risks, stating, “The Trump administration will likely mean things get much worse for Palestinians. It will actively target the Palestinian rights movement.”

Electoral Setbacks for Democrats

During the 2024 presidential election, progressive pro-Palestinian groups withheld support from Vice President Kamala Harris due to her alignment with President Biden’s policies on Gaza. This decision played a role in her loss of Michigan, a critical state with a large Arab-American population. Support in Arab-majority Dearborn dropped by 33 points compared to Biden’s performance in 2020, and youth support for Harris fell significantly.

Despite these setbacks, the movement succeeded in drawing attention to issues like U.S. arms transfers to Israel. High-profile Democrats, including Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, openly criticized Israeli policies.

Shifting Focus to Local Advocacy

With federal leverage waning, movement leaders are turning to grassroots organizing and economic pressure campaigns. Sandra Tamari, executive director of the Adalah Justice Project, emphasized the importance of boycotts and local protests, noting, “Palestine is the canary in the coal mine for broader threats to free speech and dissent.”

Miller added that the movement’s focus will remain on holding Democratic leaders accountable, urging them to publicly oppose weapons sales to Israel and address the disconnect between party leadership and voters.

Path Forward

The pro-Palestinian movement faces an uphill battle in an era of increased scrutiny and legislative threats. However, its leaders remain committed to advancing their cause through local initiatives, economic actions, and pressuring Democrats to align with voter demands.
