The New York Police Department (NYPD) has reassured the public that the mass shooting outside the Amazura nightclub in Jamaica, Queens, on New Year’s Day was “not a terrorist attack.” The incident, which occurred the same day as a terror attack in New Orleans, left 10 people injured but none critically.
Details of the Shooting Incident
At approximately 11:18 p.m., officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting outside the Amazura nightclub, where around 90 people were attending a private event. According to police, three to four males approached the venue and opened fire over 30 times toward a group standing in line outside the club.
The assailants fled westbound on 91st Street toward 143rd Place and entered a light-colored sedan with out-of-state plates. Authorities have identified the vehicle as a gray Infiniti sedan and are actively searching for it.
Victims and Immediate Response
The shooting injured six females and four males, all of whom were transported to local hospitals. Fortunately, none of the victims are in critical condition, and all are expected to recover.
The Amazura nightclub, which has a capacity of 4,000 people and regularly hosts DJs and performances, became the center of a massive police and ambulance response.
Context of New Year’s Day Violence
This incident capped off a violent start to the year, coinciding with a terror attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, which claimed 15 lives, and a Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, resulting in one death. Despite the timing, the NYPD emphasized that the Queens shooting was unrelated to terrorism.
Investigation Underway
The NYPD continues its investigation, urging anyone with information about the suspects or the vehicle to come forward. The department has also reassured residents of Jamaica, Queens, that public safety remains a top priority in the wake of the shooting.
