Top House Oversight Democrat Jamie Raskin has called on the Trump-Vance transition team for transparency regarding background checks for nominees, raising concerns over security protocols.
In a letter sent Friday to transition co-chairs Howard Lutnick and Linda McMahon, Raskin (D-Md.) emphasized the importance of ensuring nominees undergo FBI-conducted background checks before assuming office or accessing classified information. He cited recent reports questioning whether the Trump-Vance transition team would mandate FBI vetting for all appointees.
Raskin Demands Clarity on Background Checks
Raskin’s letter referred to an agreement between the transition team and the Department of Justice, allowing the FBI to conduct background checks and issue security clearances. However, concerns remain about whether the transition team will enforce this requirement. Reports suggest some nominees are hesitant to participate in FBI screenings until the agency has new leadership or are considering private-sector alternatives for vetting.
“Given this muddled record, I urge you to clearly and unequivocally commit to requiring that all nominees undergo FBI background checks,” Raskin wrote. He added that nominees must be vetted before accessing classified information to protect national security.
Scrutiny of Private Vetting and Key Figures
Raskin requested that the transition team provide documents related to contracts or agreements with private companies for conducting background checks. He also demanded information about Boris Epshteyn, a figure within the transition team reportedly under scrutiny for alleged improper conduct. Senate Democrats have also raised questions about Epshteyn, who has denied allegations of attempting to profit from advocating for potential nominees.
