Former Republican Congressman from Texas and Current GOP Presidential Candidate Will Hurd found himself far from the Milwaukee stage where most of his rivals were preparing for the inaugural 2023 GOP primary debate. In a candid interview, Hurd opened up about his absence from the event, the Republican loyalty pledge, and his views on key policy matters.

Hurd, who had his doubts about making the debate stage due to a polling-based selection process he deemed “opaque and arbitrary,” was informed by the Republican National Committee that he hadn’t qualified late Monday night. This news led him to a Times Square Marriott, where he watched the debate alongside his wife and two staffers.

A contentious issue that led to Hurd’s exclusion was the Republican loyalty pledge, which required candidates to promise their vote for the eventual nominee. He firmly stated he wouldn’t sign such a pledge, especially since it’s indicative of a party that could renominate former President Donald Trump in 2024.

Hurd’s refusal to compromise on Trump-related matters is driven by his desire to prevent a second term for President Joe Biden. He believes he can still secure the nomination despite his absence from the stage, pointing to his growing donor base and competitive position in New Hampshire polls.

Hurd critiqued his rivals’ performance during the debate, providing an intraparty rebuttal to their positions. He stressed the importance of honesty about Trump and the ability to articulate a compelling vision to grow the party, emphasizing that the GOP’s inability to expand its reach is why it hasn’t won the popular vote at the national level for two decades.

During the debate, Hurd shared his views on various issues. He highlighted the significance of jobs and the economy, stressing that the rising cost of goods and services relative to salaries concerns Americans about their future. Hurd also spoke about climate change, foreign policy, abortion, and the need for government effectiveness and fiscal responsibility.

Hurd’s absence from the debate stage allowed him to offer a unique critique of his rivals’ positions and present his own vision for the Republican Party. While he acknowledged challenges, he remains optimistic about the party’s future and its potential to address the concerns of the American people.
