In a surprising twist, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. election during a speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. Putin’s comments came as allegations of Russian meddling in the 2024 American election continue to swirl.

Putin, with a smirk, stated, “Biden recommended all his supporters to support Ms. Harris. We previously said Biden was our preferred candidate. So now we will do as he said, we will support her.” He further joked about Harris’ infectious laugh, suggesting it signals that she is doing well and might refrain from imposing sanctions, something Trump did in record numbers during his presidency.

Putin’s Support and Ongoing Allegations

This is not the first time Putin has openly claimed to favor Democratic candidates. Earlier this year, the Russian leader commented that President Biden was more experienced and predictable than Donald Trump, whom Putin has rarely criticized. This latest endorsement of Harris comes amid renewed accusations of Russian interference in U.S. elections, with Moscow’s state media accused of spreading disinformation ahead of the crucial November vote.

Putin’s Strategic Timing

With early voting in the U.S. set to begin in late September, experts suggest that Putin’s comments may be part of a broader strategy to influence American public opinion. Vladyslav Faraponov, head of the board at Ukraine’s Institute of American Studies, noted that “Putin clearly understands the timing.” Faraponov dismissed any notion that Harris would serve Russia’s interests better than Trump, calling it a public cover for Russia’s continued attempts to sway the election.

Despite these remarks, Donald Trump has maintained a consistent refusal to criticize Putin, a stance he has held since his first presidential campaign in 2015. This relationship between the former president and the Russian leader has been a focal point of numerous investigations, though none have yielded significant results.

Implications for the U.S. Election

Putin’s comments, while delivered with a hint of humor, highlight the complex geopolitics surrounding the 2024 U.S. election. As Kamala Harris continues to campaign, the intersection of Russian influence and American politics remains a central point of concern for voters and officials alike.
