Trump and Meloni Forge a Close Transatlantic Alliance
President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are rapidly building a “special relationship” reminiscent of historical partnerships like that of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. Meloni, the sole European leader at Trump’s inauguration on Monday, has positioned herself as Washington’s key ally in Europe, an opportunity that brings both potential gains and significant risks.
Strengthening Ties Through Mutual Praise
Trump has hailed Meloni as a “fantastic woman” who has “taken Europe by storm,” while Meloni has lauded Trump as a “strong and shrewd defender of the West.” Their mutual admiration has laid the groundwork for a close alliance that could benefit Italy’s global standing.
Edmondo Cirielli, Italy’s Deputy Foreign Minister, emphasized Meloni’s credibility and stability as reasons for her selection as Trump’s preferred EU partner. “This is useful for Italy and will also be useful for the EU,” Cirielli stated.
Opportunities and Challenges for Italy
Meloni’s government stands to benefit significantly from strengthened ties with the United States, particularly in trade and defense. As a NATO member with a substantial trade surplus with the U.S. (€42.1 billion in 2023), Italy has much to protect. However, aligning too closely with Trump could risk alienating other European Union (EU) leaders and create internal friction within the bloc.
Political analyst Francesco Galietti noted that while Meloni’s proximity to Trump could be advantageous, it also places her in a precarious position. “She risks isolating herself in Europe while lacking guarantees that Trump can shield Italy from tariffs or other economic pressures.”
From Europe to the Global Stage
Meloni’s rise from leading a marginalized, ultranationalist party to heading one of Italy’s most stable post-war governments has positioned her as a bridge between far-right and conservative factions in Europe. Now, her alliance with Trump presents an opportunity to extend her influence globally.
In a statement following Trump’s inauguration, Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to strengthening U.S.-EU dialogue as a pillar of stability. However, some analysts caution that Meloni’s nationalist instincts may prioritize Italian interests over broader European cooperation.
Navigating Economic and Defense Policies
Trump’s administration has signaled a tougher stance on trade imbalances and NATO defense contributions, areas where Italy is vulnerable. Meloni faces the challenge of leveraging her relationship with Trump to mitigate potential tariffs on Italian exports and avoid escalating demands for increased defense spending.
Italian newspapers have speculated that Meloni may use her rapport with Trump to shield sectors like agriculture from U.S. tariffs. Yet, experts like Arturo Varvelli of the European Council on Foreign Relations warn that Italy’s economic ties to the EU make it difficult to escape broader repercussions from any U.S.-EU trade disputes.
The Role of Elon Musk and Starlink
Elon Musk, a close confidant of Trump, has also forged a strong relationship with Meloni. Their mutual admiration has led to negotiations for a €1.5 billion contract with Starlink, part of Musk’s SpaceX, to provide secure satellite communications for Italy’s military and diplomats.
While the deal could enhance Italy’s defense capabilities, critics argue it risks undermining EU efforts to develop its own satellite system, IRIS2, slated for completion by 2030. “This is a clear example of Meloni prioritizing national interests over European cohesion,” said Nathalie Tocci of the Istituto Affari Internazionali.
Balancing National and European Interests
Meloni’s efforts to secure Italy’s place as a key U.S. ally must also contend with Trump’s demand for NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. Italy, currently spending around 1.5%, faces significant budgetary constraints due to its high national debt.
“Being Trump’s best friend won’t suffice to meet these demands,” Galietti noted, pointing out that vague promises are unlikely to satisfy Washington.
A Strategic but Precarious Alliance
While Meloni’s alignment with Trump offers opportunities to bolster Italy’s global influence, it also risks alienating European allies and complicating her balancing act between national and EU interests. Whether this transatlantic partnership can deliver tangible benefits remains to be seen, as both leaders navigate their respective political landscapes.
For now, the Trump-Meloni relationship symbolizes a new era of U.S.-Italy cooperation, albeit one fraught with challenges and uncertainties.
