In Butler, Pennsylvania, a rally intended to bolster Donald Trump’s presidential campaign quickly descended into chaos and violence. Eyewitnesses, including high-profile Republican politicians, described the harrowing scene that unfolded when gunfire erupted during the event.

Scene of Pandemonium

Dave McCormick, a Republican Senate hopeful, recounted the initial feel-good mood of the rally before it was shattered by the “pop, pop, pop” of gunfire. Rep. Daniel Meuser (R-Pa.) described his immediate reaction to the gunfire, fixating on Trump as shots rang out. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) compared the chaotic scene to that of a “third world” country, noting a woman next to him was wounded.

“There’s lots of blood, and then the Secret Service were all over President Trump,” McCormick said in an interview with POLITICO.

Chaos and Bloodshed

Reports indicate that gunshots whizzed past Trump, striking his right ear and killing a rally goer. Descriptions of injuries and the ensuing commotion spread rapidly as attendees and politicians shared their accounts. McCormick, who sat in the front row behind Trump, told NBC’s Lester Holt about the extensive bloodshed he witnessed.

“I saw him grab his ear and then hit the deck,” Meuser recounted, estimating that between eight and 10 shots were fired. He also described a victim being shot less than 20 feet from where he, McCormick, and other politicians were seated.

Immediate Aftermath

Slippery Rock Mayor Jondavid Longo, who had spoken at the rally before Trump took the stage, thought he heard a bullet ricochet off the bleachers. As the Secret Service responded, some attendees were crying, while many were reassured when Trump raised his fist to signal he was okay.

“Everyone just dropped,” Kelly told CBS News. “A lady who was next to me was hit. Other people were hit.”

Politicians’ Reactions

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas) revealed that his nephew, who was behind Trump at the rally, was grazed in the neck by a bullet. Jackson told Fox News that his nephew was in the “line of fire” and described the terrifying moments when the shots were fired.

“They heard the shots, and everybody dropped to the ground,” Jackson said. “… A bullet crossed his neck, and he was bleeding.”

Demonstration of Strength

Despite the chaos, many rally attendees and politicians highlighted Trump’s response as a demonstration of his toughness. McCormick noted Trump’s emergence from under the podium and his defiant fist pump as a signal of strength.

“You saw the fist come out in both defiance and reassurance of strength,” McCormick told Holt. “About the same time, I recognized somebody behind me had been wounded.”

Conclusion

The Trump rally shooting in Pennsylvania left an indelible mark on the attendees, highlighting the intense and often dangerous nature of current political events. As investigations continue, the incident has already had a profound impact on the political landscape.
