In a bid to secure the support of California Republicans in the GOP primary, former President Donald Trump didn’t hold back at the state party convention. He took jabs at Rep. Nancy Pelosi, criticizing her stance on border walls and referencing the attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi, last October.

Bold Criticisms from Trump

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd of California Republicans, Trump criticized Pelosi, saying, “We’ll stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi, who ruined San Francisco — how’s her husband doing, anybody know?” He also pointed out her opposition to border wall construction despite having a wall around her own house, which he suggested hadn’t done a good job.

These remarks mark some of Trump’s boldest comments about the attack on Paul Pelosi. In the incident, an assailant brutally attacked him with a hammer, resulting in a fractured skull. Previously, Trump had stirred far-right conspiracy theories surrounding the attack while also describing it as a “sad situation.”

Targeting Prominent Democrats

During his speech, Trump targeted several of California’s prominent Democrats. He expressed determination to reverse what he called the “decline of America” and the “desecration” of California. Trump characterized the state as a “dumping ground.”

However, he notably omitted any mention of the recently deceased former Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who held a significant political role in California.

California’s Republican Primary and Legal Battles

While Trump is unlikely to win California in a general election, the state boasts the largest number of delegates in the Republican primary. All these delegates are up for grabs on March 5. Notably, Trump mentioned that on this date, he might be in court facing charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Varied Stances on California’s Figures

Trump offered a mixed assessment of California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, stating that they had a working relationship during his presidency despite differing views. He also suggested, without evidence, that Newsom’s support for him was underpinned by doubts about President Joe Biden’s ability to “make it.”

Trump’s Dominance in Republican Primary Polling

The California Republican Party convention also featured speeches from other prominent Republicans, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, businessperson Vivek Ramaswamy, and Sen. Tim Scott. Trump’s level of excitement among party members was palpable, as he currently leads in Republican primary polling in the state.
