Former President Donald Trump unleashed a series of sharp attacks against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, branding him as “freakish” and excessively liberal during his first rally since Walz joined the Democratic ticket alongside Kamala Harris. Speaking in Montana, Trump warned that a Harris-Walz administration would lead the country down a path of socialism and extreme liberalism.

Trump’s Attack on Walz’s Policies

Trump accused Walz of promoting socialism and being overly permissive on immigration and transgender issues. He also blamed Walz for the unrest in Minneapolis following the murder of George Floyd in 2020, claiming that the governor allowed “rioters and looters” to destroy the city. Trump tied these criticisms directly to Harris, stating, “This is her ideology. That’s why she picked him.”

He further warned that the Democratic ticket would turn America into a “full-blown communist country” if they win in November.

Continued Smears Against Kamala Harris

Trump didn’t stop at attacking Walz. He also intensified his ongoing smear campaign against Kamala Harris, who is currently out-fundraising him and gaining in recent polls. He mispronounced her name and disparaged her for not conducting a sit-down interview since becoming the Democratic nominee. Trump played video clips from Harris’s previous presidential campaign, attempting to paint her as “dangerously liberal” by highlighting her past positions on gun control and fracking.

Political Context of Trump’s Montana Visit

Trump’s visit to Montana, a reliably red state he won by 16 percentage points in 2020, was primarily to support Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy. The former president used the occasion to criticize incumbent Senator Jon Tester, one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the Senate, and even insulted Tester’s weight during the rally.

Despite a minor detour due to a mechanical issue with his plane, Trump continued his Rocky Mountain campaign swing, which included fundraising efforts in Wyoming and Colorado.
