‘Traitor’: Trump Supporters Harangue Pence in New Hampshire

Former Vice President Mike Pence faced heated criticism and insults from a crowd of Donald Trump supporters during a town hall event in Londonderry, New Hampshire. The incident comes as Pence continues to grapple with the fallout from certifying the 2020 election results for Joe Biden, a ceremonial duty that preceded the Capitol riot and made him a target of ardent Trump supporters.

As Pence arrived at the campaign event, one man called out, “Why’d you sell out the people? Why didn’t you uphold the Constitution?” In response, Pence defended his actions, saying, “I upheld the Constitution. Read it.”

The protesters, dressed in MAGA gear and holding pro-Trump signs, voiced their disapproval, and footage from ABC News and NBC News captured the tense encounter.

Since certifying the election results on January 6, 2021, Pence has faced challenges in gaining solid ground in the GOP presidential primary. He has not yet qualified for the August GOP debate, raising just $3.8 million in the second quarter of the year and polling in the single digits in national and early primary state surveys.

In recent appearances, Pence has encountered opposition from Trump’s base. At an NRA convention in April, audience members booed him from the start of his speech, and he had a contentious exchange with Tucker Carlson at a candidate forum in mid-July.

Despite the backlash, Pence has been careful not to alienate any potential support from Trump’s base. He acknowledged the passion within the movement but rejected any suggestion that it translated into the violence and vandalism of the Capitol riot. Pence emphasized that he views the people in this movement as the best people in the country, whether they support him or not.

Following the recent indictment of the former president over charges of conspiring against the U.S. in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election, Pence indicated that he plans to use the indictment as a line of contrast in his campaign. He made a statement on Tuesday, saying, “Today’s indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States.”

Meanwhile, Trump is facing both federal charges for mishandling classified documents and state charges related to alleged hush money payments to a porn star. Pence, during a national security event in New Hampshire, emphasized the importance of handling classified materials seriously. Although he didn’t mention the former president by name, Pence spoke about his own “inadvertent” mishandling of documents found in his Indiana home earlier this year, saying, “I owned up to it.”

As the 2024 election season unfolds, Pence’s actions and statements continue to draw attention and scrutiny from both supporters and critics alike.
