Title: GOP Presidential Candidates Criticize DeSantis Over Abortion Stance

In a recent turn of events, two GOP presidential candidates have taken aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his stance on abortion, sparking controversy within the party. The criticism comes after the leading anti-abortion group, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, slammed DeSantis for his refusal to support nationwide abortion restrictions, deeming it “unacceptable.”

Former Vice President Mike Pence, known for his staunch anti-abortion views, joined the fray by posting on X (Twitter), stating that pro-life Americans would “have a champion in the White House!” if he were to win the election. He linked out to the SBA’s public statement, which strongly criticized DeSantis for not supporting federal abortion restrictions. Notably, Pence has expressed his support for a national ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a restriction that DeSantis has already enacted in Florida.

Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina was the first to openly criticize the Florida governor, urging fellow Republicans not to retreat on life issues. SBA’s rebuke of DeSantis was triggered by his recent interview, where he advocated for leaving abortion policy decisions to the states. While DeSantis emphasized that he would champion pro-life values in the Oval Office and support local communities and states in advancing the cause of life, he expressed skepticism about Congress’ ability to implement nationwide abortion restrictions effectively.

The backlash from the anti-abortion group comes at a critical time for DeSantis, who is currently in a heated campaign shakeup as he tries to catch up to the frontrunner, former President Donald Trump, in the race for the Republican presidential ticket. A recent poll released on Monday showed Trump leading DeSantis by a significant margin of 37 percent, while both Pence and Scott polled at a mere 3 percent.

The issue of abortion has once again become a divisive topic within the GOP, with candidates vying to appeal to the party’s conservative base. As the race intensifies, the question of how each candidate will navigate their stance on abortion remains a key factor in shaping the 2024 presidential primaries.
