Three members of the United States military were killed, and 25 others sustained injuries in a drone attack on a U.S. base located in Jordan, as confirmed by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The incident occurred at a base situated in northeast Jordan, near the border with Syria.

U.S. President Joe Biden attributed the attack to “radical Iran-backed militant groups.” This marks the first instance of U.S. soldiers being fatally targeted in the region since Hamas’s assault on Israel on October 7. Previous attacks on U.S. bases in the area had not resulted in casualties reported by the U.S. military.

President Biden, while acknowledging that details are still being gathered, asserted that the assault was perpetrated by extremist groups backed by Iran, operating within Syria and Iraq. He pledged to hold those accountable for the attack “at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

In a statement, President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden expressed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased service members, as well as to Americans nationwide, mourning the loss incurred in what was described as a reprehensible and unjust assault.
