In Delano, California, high gas prices are a major concern for residents. The town, known for the historic 1965 grape pickers’ strike led by Cesar Chavez, is part of California’s 22nd congressional district, which has typically sent Republican David Valadao to the House of Representatives despite a Democratic-leaning majority. However, in the upcoming election, Democrats are determined to change that as they aim to regain control of the House.

Despite the district’s Democratic tilt and Valadao’s impeachment vote against former President Trump, Democrats face challenges. Many Delano residents are focused on day-to-day living, and mobilizing voters requires constant reminders. The election will be pivotal in deciding the balance of power in Washington, and Democrats need to gain five seats to secure a House majority.

While Democrats may benefit from redistricting changes, Valadao’s re-election battle is unique. Valadao, who previously served in the California state assembly, was defeated by Democrat TJ Cox in 2018 but regained his seat in 2020. His vote for Trump’s impeachment led to a firestorm of criticism from his Republican constituents.

The 2024 race is shaping up to be a repeat of the previous election, with Valadao’s impeachment vote and Trump’s potential run as major factors. Democrats have several candidates in the primary, including Chris Mathys and Rudy Salas, who have challenged Valadao in the past. The House Majority Pac, linked to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has spent on TV ads targeting Valadao.

Valadao’s position on House leadership and support for figures like Jim Jordan, known for his support of Trump’s baseless election fraud claims, may impact his reputation as an independent-minded farmer.

In Delano, which is part of Valadao’s district, campaign efforts are essential to winning over voters. Many, including undocumented residents, express disillusionment with politicians and their lack of assistance. The cost of gas plays a significant role in voters’ choices for Congress and the presidency.

As the election approaches, winning over the voters of Delano, reminding them of the importance of their votes, and addressing their concerns will be crucial for the Democratic Party’s campaign to regain control of the House of Representatives in 2024.
