Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin enjoys widespread popularity within the Old Dominion state. As speculation mounts about a potential 2024 presidential bid, his local supporters express a collective sentiment: they prefer to see their governor remain focused on state-level leadership for the time being.

Speaking at an event hosted by Youngkin’s political action committee, Spirit of Virginia, a prominent enthusiast, Conor Forrest, asserts that while he envisions a presidential run for Youngkin in the future, the governor’s work in Virginia remains vital. Forrest, a devoted sports fan and NFL podcast host from Loudon County, emphasizes the importance of Youngkin completing the remaining two years of his current term before venturing into national politics.

Since assuming office as Virginia’s governor two years ago, Youngkin has consistently maintained approval ratings exceeding 50%, surpassing even President Joe Biden’s standing in Virginia and many other politicians nationwide.

Natalie Erdossy, a social worker from Fauquier County, echoes this sentiment, emphasizing that Youngkin is their governor at present, making it less appealing to see him enter the 2024 presidential race.

Notwithstanding the local sentiment, donors and members of the national Republican Party have been discussing Youngkin’s prospects as a potential presidential candidate. His name circulates alongside former President Donald Trump, who remains the leading contender in GOP polls, while his challengers, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, trail by a significant margin.

Youngkin, however, has yet to definitively address the prospect of a 2024 bid, instead emphasizing his current focus on the upcoming 2023 elections in Virginia. These elections will determine the composition of the Virginia House of Delegates and the state Senate, with Youngkin and Virginia Republicans aiming to maintain their majority in the House and gain control of the Senate.

As Youngkin harnesses his strong local approval ratings, he embarks on a statewide bus tour to support fellow Republicans in competitive state House and Senate races. The tour kicked off with stops in Loudoun County and Fredericksburg, regions known for their significant role in state politics.

In these campaign stops, Youngkin champions “common sense conservative policies,” focusing on tax reform and advocating for increased school choice. He rallies supporters with chants of “hold the House and flip the Senate,” underlining the critical importance of the impending elections.

Youngkin’s gubernatorial victory in 2021 marked a remarkable comeback for Virginia Republicans, following the 2020 elections. He highlights the national significance of the upcoming 2023 elections, asserting that “all eyes are on Virginia” as the state GOP aims to reclaim its dominance in this pivotal battleground state.

Amidst the political discourse, abortion rights have emerged as a key issue in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. Virginia Democrats have raised concerns about potential restrictions on abortion should Republicans secure victory in November. While Democrats assert that Youngkin and his allies aim to ban abortion, Youngkin has countered these claims, emphasizing a 15-week abortion ban proposal with exceptions for specific cases, viewing it as an opportunity for Virginians to find common ground on a complex and contentious issue.

Virginia, with its unique political dynamics and history, is positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the Republican landscape leading up to the 2024 elections, with Youngkin emerging as a prominent figure in the state’s political future.
