Harris’ Intentional Approach to Identity

Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.) recently discussed Kamala Harris’ approach to her identity in the 2024 presidential campaign, noting that Harris has intentionally not made her identity as a Black woman a central theme. Butler explained that Harris, as a Black woman, is inherently aware of her identity, and the world around her constantly reinforces it. Therefore, Harris feels no need to overtly highlight her race or gender during her campaign.

A Broader Mission Beyond Identity

Critics have pointed out the differences between Harris’ campaign and Hillary Clinton’s previous presidential run, particularly in how each candidate addressed their historical significance. However, Butler emphasized that Harris’ candidacy transcends her race and gender. Butler stated that Harris is focused on a mission to secure a better future for the country, one that would be just as important regardless of her race or gender.

A Vision for the Future

Butler believes that Harris’ campaign is driven by a deep commitment to fighting for a future that benefits all Americans, rather than being defined by the historical implications of her identity. Harris is committed to addressing the challenges facing the nation, and her focus remains on the broader impact she hopes to achieve rather than her personal identity as a Black woman.
