Rep. Bennie Thompson expresses confidence that the federal government is well-prepared for the upcoming transition of power in 2025, thanks to improvements made since January 6, 2021. However, he remains cautious about potential threats to democracy as the next election approaches.
Enhanced Security Measures
Rep. Bennie Thompson, former chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, affirmed that the federal government has significantly improved its readiness for the 2024-2025 presidential transition. Speaking in an interview, Thompson highlighted the various security upgrades implemented since the Capitol insurrection in January 2021. These include increased budgets, enhanced Capitol security, and improved intelligence sharing among federal and local agencies such as the FBI, state police, and Capitol police. Thompson emphasized that these measures have created a more secure environment for the upcoming transition.
Concerns Over Election Misinformation
Despite these advancements, Thompson expressed concerns about the ongoing threats to democracy. He noted that former President Donald Trump and his allies are already spreading distrust in the electoral process, similar to what occurred in the lead-up to the January 6th insurrection. Thompson warned that this rhetoric has the potential to incite unrest if not addressed. He also mentioned that members of the Jan. 6 committee continue to face harassment, reflecting the lingering tensions from the 2020 election.
Legislative Proposals for Accountability
Thompson also discussed his legislative efforts to hold former presidents accountable for their actions. He defended a bill that would strip Secret Service protection from former presidents convicted of crimes, arguing that such individuals should not receive protection while serving prison sentences. The legislation, which Thompson introduced before Trump’s recent legal troubles, aims to ensure that the Secret Service’s mission is not compromised by protecting individuals who have violated the law.
Continued Vigilance in the Face of Threats
As the 2024 election approaches, Thompson urged continued vigilance to protect the integrity of the democratic process. While he is confident in the security measures now in place, he stressed the importance of addressing the ongoing challenges posed by misinformation and potential threats to the peaceful transfer of power.
