WILMINGTON, Delaware — In the opening statements of Hunter Biden’s trial on gun-related charges, prosecutors emphasized the importance of treating him like any other defendant, despite his high-profile status as the son of President Joe Biden. Derek Hines, a prosecutor on special counsel David Weiss’s team, asserted that the law applies to everyone equally, regardless of their name or background.

Prosecution’s Case

Hines outlined the prosecution’s strategy, stating they would present compelling evidence showing Hunter Biden’s drug addiction at the time of purchasing the handgun in 2018. This addiction, they argued, led Biden to falsify information on the federal background-check form by denying his drug use. To drive home their point, prosecutors played audio excerpts from Biden’s memoir, where he candidly described his struggles with addiction.

Defense’s Arguments

Abbe Lowell, Biden’s lead defense attorney, countered the prosecution’s claims, arguing that Biden did not lie on the background-check form. Lowell pointed out the lack of clarity in the form’s definition of a drug user or addict and suggested that Biden’s past addiction should not disqualify him from purchasing a firearm. He also insinuated political motives behind the charges, although the judge barred such arguments from the trial.

Trial Developments

During the trial, jurors heard from FBI special agent Erika Jensen, who testified about Biden’s drug use, supported by excerpts from his memoir and text messages allegedly depicting his interactions with drug dealers. Bank records revealed substantial cash withdrawals by Biden, raising questions about his drug habits and financial transactions during the relevant period.

Juror Substitution and Rulings

The trial encountered a minor delay due to a juror’s transportation issue, leading to their substitution with an alternate juror. Additionally, the judge ruled on various evidentiary matters, allowing the prosecution to present photos of Biden during the alleged drug-use period but limiting additional excerpts from his book. Despite defense objections, the judge largely sided with the prosecution on evidentiary issues.

Family Support and Trial Dynamics

Several members of the Biden family, including First Lady Jill Biden and Hunter Biden’s wife and half-sister, attended the trial to offer support. Hunter Biden exchanged gestures of camaraderie with his defense attorney before proceedings began, and the defense sought to humanize him by highlighting his struggles with addiction and his efforts to overcome them.

As the trial unfolds, it remains to be seen how jurors will weigh the evidence presented and whether Hunter Biden’s familial connections will influence their decision-making process.
