Governor Kathy Hochul is under increasing scrutiny as her administration grapples with multiple crises, the most recent being the indictment of Linda Sun, a former deputy chief of staff. Sun’s arrest, linked to her alleged work as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government, has further damaged Hochul’s political standing and raised concerns about her reelection chances in 2026.

Hochul’s low approval ratings and string of controversies have ignited discussions among Democrats about a potential primary challenge to prevent a Republican from taking control of New York state.

Hochul’s Low Approval Rating Sparks Concern

A recent Siena College poll shows Hochul’s favorability rating at just 39%. This is concerning for Democratic leaders who are already wary of her narrow 2022 victory over Republican challenger Lee Zeldin. That election result was seen as a disappointment by many in the party, including Nancy Pelosi, who publicly blamed Hochul’s performance for down-ballot losses in key House races.

Democratic operatives are worried about Hochul’s ability to lead the party to victory in 2026, with some even questioning whether a new candidate should be placed at the top of the ticket.

Sun Indictment Adds to Mounting Scandals

The Linda Sun indictment, which accuses the former deputy of trying to influence New York’s stance on China and Taiwan, is just the latest in a series of issues plaguing Hochul’s administration. Republicans have seized on this scandal, adding to their criticisms of the governor’s leadership.

The scandal comes on top of Hochul’s struggles to manage issues like New York City’s congestion pricing toll program and the controversial cash bail law. Her efforts to adjust these policies have been met with resistance, adding to the perception that her administration is faltering.

Can Hochul Survive a Primary Challenge?

Despite the scandals, Hochul’s campaign remains well-funded, with $13.5 million in cash on hand. She has also been active in helping down-ballot candidates by expanding the New York Democratic Committee and focusing on key swing districts.

However, Democratic insiders remain concerned. John Samuelsen, president of the Transport Workers Union, has voiced his skepticism about Hochul’s ability to win reelection, suggesting that a primary challenge may be necessary to avoid a Republican takeover.

With her 2026 reelection campaign still two years away, Hochul’s future may depend on how well she performs in the 2024 elections, where she is working to help Democrats maintain control of the House.
