Johnson Gains Momentum as Speaker Nominee, Faces Crucial Vote

In a surprising turn of events, Republican nominee Mike Johnson from Louisiana is rapidly gaining momentum as the potential new Speaker of the House. Just moments before the House convened, Johnson confidently announced that he secured the crucial 217 votes needed for victory on the floor. His supporters within the party are optimistic, and a quorum call is scheduled for noon, followed by an anticipated vote on Johnson’s candidacy.

House Republicans huddle around U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson after he was elected as the Republican Speaker nominee during a conference meeting in the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill on October 24, 2023 in Washington, DC.

Johnson’s sway within the party was evident as he managed to garner support from three Republicans who initially voted “present” during closed-door discussions: Representatives Thomas Massie (Ky.), Mark Amodei (Nev.), and French Hill (Ark.). Their backing, alongside Johnson’s earlier endorsements, could secure his position as the Speaker. Notably, Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s nomination and subsequent withdrawal had set the stage for Johnson’s bid, marking the third speaker pick since Kevin McCarthy’s recent ousting.

Approximately 20 Republicans were absent during the initial vote assessing support for Johnson. Should at least four of these absent members oppose Johnson, it could thwart his chances of becoming Speaker. However, as of Wednesday morning, no Republicans had publicly declared their opposition to Johnson, indicating a potential smooth path for his candidacy.

In an effort to address concerns and secure additional support, Johnson spent the morning engaging with party members. Republicans, despite some initial hesitations, are leaning towards Johnson, with even those on the fence attributing their support to the need for party unity and acknowledging Johnson’s ability to rally weary members.
