Jay Johnston, an actor known for his role in the animated series “Bob’s Burgers,” has pleaded guilty to obstructing officers during the January 6 Capitol riot. Johnston, 55, admitted to participating in the riot and now faces up to five years in federal prison, with sentencing set for October.
Johnston’s involvement in the Capitol riot came to light through social media investigations, which identified him from a post by the FBI in March 2021. Authorities stated that Johnston took part in a group assault on police officers and helped carry a stolen riot shield. Text messages later revealed that Johnston had admitted to being at the Capitol, describing the event as chaotic and violent.
The actor, with a career spanning back to the mid-1990s, has appeared in various well-known shows and movies, including “Mr. Show with Bob and David,” “The Sarah Silverman Program,” and “Arrested Development.” Despite his extensive career, Johnston faced repercussions for his actions during the Capitol riot. He was fired from “Bob’s Burgers” in December 2021, where he voiced the character Jimmy Pesto. The character was recast for the show’s 14th and final season in 2023.
Johnston was arrested in California last summer and initially faced four charges. His plea agreement saw him admit to a single charge of civil disorder, with the remaining three charges being dropped. His case is part of a larger legal response to the January 6 Capitol riot, with nearly 1,500 people charged and over 800 individuals pleading guilty to various federal charges.
The Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, saw a large group of supporters of then-President Donald Trump storming the Capitol building in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. The event resulted in numerous injuries, extensive damage, and a significant number of arrests and prosecutions. As legal proceedings continue, Johnston’s case highlights the ongoing efforts to hold those involved accountable.
