House Speaker Mike Johnson Addresses Allegations of Election Denial

House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to allegations of being an election denier, stating that claims he denies the 2020 election results are “nonsense.” During an interview on “Face The Nation,” Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, did not affirm that President Joe Biden won the 2020 election but emphasized that President Biden had been certified and sworn in.

Johnson Maintains Constitutional Violations in 2020 Election

Johnson argued that the Constitution was “clearly violated during the 2020 election.” While acknowledging President Biden’s certification and time in office, Johnson contended that the election law changes made by several states amid the Covid-19 pandemic violated the Constitution. He insisted that these changes occurred without proper ratification by state legislatures.

Role in Texas Lawsuit and Criticism from Liz Cheney

In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss, Johnson supported a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate results in several states. Former Rep. Liz Cheney criticized Johnson in her book “Oath and Honor,” accusing him of leading a constitutionally dubious effort. Cheney claimed Johnson misled colleagues about the lawsuit’s claims regarding election fraud.

Johnson’s Response to Cheney’s Criticism

Johnson expressed surprise at Cheney’s criticism, asserting that they were in constant dialogue during the process, and Cheney even considered signing onto the amicus brief supporting the lawsuit. Johnson maintained that changes to election laws without state legislative ratification were constitutional violations, emphasizing this as an undisputed fact.
