In an unexpected turn of events, the anticipated GOP presidential debate in New Hampshire has been canceled as both CNN and ABC News withdrew their scheduled debates. CNN spokespersons announced on Wednesday that they were canceling the debate scheduled for Sunday due to only one qualifying candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, accepting the invitation to take the stage.
Haley’s Debate Conditions and Trump’s Absence
ABC News had previously canceled its Thursday debate after former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley insisted on participating only if Donald Trump or Joe Biden were present. Trump, who has skipped every GOP primary debate thus far, expressed last month that he would debate one of his Republican rivals if the New Hampshire primary results were “very close.”
DeSantis’ Solo Appearance
With DeSantis being the only qualifying candidate willing to participate, the debate plans fell apart. The DeSantis campaign, in response to Haley’s avoidance of the debate stage, accused her of shying away from tough questions and suggested her reluctance was tied to a desire to become Trump’s vice president.
CNN’s Alternative: Town Hall with Haley
In place of the canceled debate, CNN will now host a town hall featuring Nikki Haley on Thursday at 9 p.m. EST in New Hampshire. This alternative format will provide an opportunity for voters to engage with Haley directly. DeSantis, who previously attended a town hall with CNN, is not scheduled for participation in this event.
Haley’s Perspective on GOP Primary
After securing third place in the Iowa caucuses, Haley declared the GOP presidential primary as a “two-person race” between herself and Trump. During a recent CNN appearance, she emphasized that Trump is the frontrunner and the primary contender she aims to challenge, asserting that there is no need for her to debate anyone else.
