In a dramatic twist during the civil defamation trial against Donald Trump, a federal judge has threatened to exclude the former president from the courtroom after he made disruptive comments within earshot of the jury. The trial revolves around a lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of making derogatory comments about her during his presidency.

Trump’s Remarks Prompt Stern Rebuke

The incident occurred when Trump repeatedly muttered phrases such as “witch hunt” during Carroll’s testimony. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan sternly rebuked Trump during a contentious courtroom session, warning that the right to be present in court could be forfeited if disruptive behavior continues. Kaplan addressed Trump directly, expressing hope that he wouldn’t have to consider excluding him from the trial.

Carroll’s Legal Team Complains

Carroll’s lawyers complained twice about Trump’s disruptive comments, alleging that the jury could hear him. The former president’s mutterings included labeling the case as a “witch hunt” and a “con job,” mirroring comments he has previously made about the ongoing trial. The jury had earlier watched a video of Trump referring to a previous trial against Carroll as a “witch hunt” and a “disgrace.”

Threats of Exclusion and Trump’s Response

Kaplan’s threat of potential exclusion came after Trump’s audible comments during Carroll’s testimony. Trump responded to the judge’s warning, expressing that he would “love” to be excluded. The exchange revealed the tension between Kaplan and Trump, with the former president suggesting that Kaplan, too, couldn’t control himself under the circumstances.

Background of the Defamation Trial

The defamation trial follows Carroll’s accusations against Trump, alleging that he raped her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s. In the previous trial overseen by Kaplan, the jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $5 million in damages after finding him guilty of sexual abuse and defamation. The ongoing trial seeks at least $10 million in damages.

Impact of Trump’s Comments on Carroll

Carroll testified extensively about the impact of Trump’s denigrating comments on her life. She described how being called a liar by the president affected her world, emphasizing the personal toll of Trump’s disparaging remarks.
