Georgia Appeals Court Disqualifies Fani Willis from Trump Election Interference Case

Georgia's Court of Appeals disqualifies DA Fani Willis from overseeing Trump’s election interference case due to conflict of interest claims. Indictments remain intact.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis looks on during a hearing in the case of the State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump at the Fulton County Courthouse on March 1, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled Thursday to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from overseeing the criminal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump and other defendants.

The court’s decision stems from allegations of a conflict of interest, with Trump’s legal team citing Willis’ romantic relationship with a prosecutor involved in the case. Despite the disqualification, the court upheld the indictment against Trump and other defendants accused of attempting to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results.

This ruling overturns a previous decision by a Fulton County trial court judge that allowed Willis to continue prosecuting the high-profile case.
