In a bid to secure the 2024 presidential nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has revealed a comprehensive economic plan with ten key pillars aimed at revitalizing the struggling US economy and supporting the middle class. One crucial aspect of his “Declaration of economic independence” is to reform the education system. DeSantis aims to hold universities accountable for the loans their students accrue and make it easier to discharge student loans through bankruptcy, just like any other loan.
Currently, discharging student loans through bankruptcy is challenging, requiring a demonstration of “undue hardship” to a bankruptcy court, but DeSantis is determined to ease the process to aid students burdened with loans. The governor expressed sympathy for students who were misled by universities into taking on federal loan money without ensuring their success.
Amid the unveiling of the economic plan at a campaign event in New Hampshire, DeSantis faced controversy over new teaching standards in Florida. These standards require middle schoolers to learn about slaves’ skills being applied for their personal benefit, prompting concerns from Black Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Byron Donalds.
While President Joe Biden has attempted to forgive some student loan debt, his proposed program was struck down by the Supreme Court. As a result, millions of borrowers will resume student loan payments after a hiatus that began in 2020.
This economic plan is the third major policy announcement from DeSantis since launching his campaign, following his border security plan and “mission first military” plan. However, recent polls show former President Donald Trump leading DeSantis by 37 percentage points in the GOP presidential field.
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who will not seek reelection, advised DeSantis to prioritize charisma and leadership over policy matters.
DeSantis framed his economic plan as a declaration of “economic independence from the failed elites and policies that have harmed this nation’s middle class.” He strongly emphasized the need for Americans to win, while the elites lose, highlighting his commitment to prioritize the interests of the American people in his presidential bid.
