In a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, former President Donald Trump emerged as the clear frontrunner in the GOP presidential field, boasting an overwhelming 54 percent of support from likely voters surveyed. The poll, released on Monday, highlights Trump’s continued dominance in the Republican electorate despite facing various lawsuits and charges.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, once seen as Trump’s most formidable competitor, lags significantly behind with only 17 percent of support. Following DeSantis are former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, each garnering a mere three percent of the respondents’ backing.
The results underscore Trump’s strong appeal among Republican voters and signal the uphill battle DeSantis must now face amid a campaign shakeup. Despite Trump’s controversial reputation and his use of derogatory language against opponents, DeSantis claimed that such insults have actually boosted his own popularity, indicating that some voters may be turned off by Trump’s approach.
The poll reveals Trump’s significant lead across various demographics within the GOP electorate. He maintains a dominant position in favorability among men and women, younger and older voters, college-educated individuals, and those who didn’t attend college. Additionally, Trump’s support remains strong among both moderates and conservatives, as well as residents from different regions, including cities, rural areas, and suburban neighborhoods.
The survey, conducted from July 23 to 27, covered 1,329 registered voters nationwide, including an oversample of 818 registered Republican voters. The margin of error stands at plus or minus 3.67 percentage points for registered voters and plus or minus 3.96 percentage points for likely voters in the Republican primary.
As the 2024 presidential race continues to take shape, the significant lead held by Donald Trump in this poll sends a clear signal to the Republican Party and potential rivals about the enduring strength of his support base.
