Florida Distributes Free Gas as Hurricane Milton Recovery Efforts Intensify

Florida sets up free fuel distribution sites as the state battles fuel shortages in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. Governor Ron DeSantis faces criticism for his response to the shortages.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — As Florida struggles to recover from the devastating impact of Hurricane Milton, Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a plan to distribute free gasoline to residents in the hardest-hit areas. This comes in response to widespread fuel shortages that have caused long lines and frustration in regions affected by the deadly storm.

Fuel Distribution Sites Opened Across Gulf Coast

On Saturday, Governor DeSantis revealed that three fuel distribution sites had been set up in Plant City, Bradenton, and St. Petersburg, with plans to expand to other cities like Tampa and Sarasota. Each site will offer up to 10 gallons of free gas to residents in need, particularly those struggling financially.

The state’s emergency management director, Kevin Guthrie, also confirmed that millions of gallons of fuel would be unloaded from the Port of Tampa later in the day to alleviate shortages. The state has already been using Florida Highway Patrol troopers to escort fuel trucks and ensure safe and efficient distribution across affected areas.

“We just want people to be able to get what they need,” DeSantis said during a press conference at the Plant City fuel distribution site.

Criticism from Political Opponents

Despite these efforts, Governor DeSantis has faced criticism from political opponents regarding the state’s handling of fuel shortages. Nikki Fried, the chair of the Florida Democratic Party, took to social media to criticize DeSantis, accusing him of poor preparation and failing to take responsibility for the gas shortages in the Tampa Bay area.

Fried’s post on Friday night called the situation a “major failure of hurricane response,” highlighting the scarcity of gas in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties.

Milton’s Devastation and Federal Support

Hurricane Milton tore through Florida earlier in the week, spawning deadly tornadoes, high winds, and severe flooding. While it was not the worst-case scenario officials had feared, over 1.5 million people remained without power as of midday on Saturday. Additionally, GasBuddy, a website tracking fuel shortages, reported that nearly 30% of gas stations in the state were out of fuel as of Friday afternoon.

In response to the disaster, President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration late Friday, unlocking federal assistance for 34 counties. This support will aid individuals and local governments in their recovery efforts. Biden is expected to visit the state on Sunday to assess the damage caused by Milton, which marks the second major hurricane to hit Florida in just two weeks.

Aid Efforts Continue

In addition to free gas, Florida has established dozens of supply distribution sites in 14 counties, providing essential resources like meals, water, tarps, and ice. Guthrie also announced that state officials anticipate swift federal approval of programs designed to help residents with housing and home repairs.

The fuel distribution sites are part of the state’s broader recovery plan, but Guthrie urged those who can afford gas to continue purchasing from local stations, emphasizing that fuel depots are intended for residents experiencing financial hardship.
