The America First Policy Institute (AFPI), a conservative think tank closely aligned with Donald Trump and his political agenda, has been hit by an apparent cyber attack, raising concerns over election-related interference as the 2024 race intensifies. The group, which has been preparing policy strategies for a potential second Trump administration, has since secured its systems and contacted federal authorities for assistance.

Breach Suspected to Be Foreign-Sponsored

The breach was confirmed by Marc Lotter, a spokesperson for AFPI, who hinted at the involvement of nation-state actors. “It is not surprising that hostile foreign actors would attempt to infiltrate our IT,” Lotter stated. He added that the tactics and procedures observed in the attack were similar to those used in foreign state-sponsored operations, allowing the group to remediate and respond quickly.

While AFPI has not disclosed the extent of the breach—whether any sensitive data was stolen or the exact origin of the attack—Lotter emphasized the organization’s swift response to secure its internal network. The FBI has not commented on the incident, keeping details of the investigation under wraps.

Rising Concerns Over Foreign Election Interference

The attack on AFPI comes amid growing concerns about foreign interference in the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election. Recent intelligence reports have identified foreign actors, including Russia, China, and Iran, as potential threats to the integrity of the election. Earlier this year, U.S. intelligence confirmed that the Trump campaign had been targeted by Iranian hackers, who allegedly sent compromised information to individuals linked to the Biden campaign.

These cyberattacks are part of a broader trend of foreign cyber operations aimed at undermining U.S. institutions, both governmental and private. In recent weeks, Attorney General Merrick Garland has warned of increasing attempts by foreign adversaries to sow distrust and influence the outcome of the election through disinformation campaigns and cyber intrusions.

AFPI’s Role in Trump’s Potential Second Term

The America First Policy Institute plays a central role in shaping the policy framework for a potential second Trump administration. Founded after Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, AFPI serves as a “White House-in-waiting”, developing strategies and policies that reflect Trump’s “America First” agenda. The organization has deep ties to the former president, with its board chaired by Linda McMahon, co-chair of Trump’s official transition team.

Brooke Rollins, AFPI’s president and CEO, who previously served as director of Trump’s domestic policy council, is seen as a key figure in the organization. She could potentially be a top contender for chief of staff in a future Trump administration.

As the 2024 election draws near, AFPI’s role in shaping the Republican platform becomes increasingly significant, and this breach underscores the growing cybersecurity threats facing political organizations in the current climate.
