Former President Donald Trump has made a stunning reentry to the digital realm, reemerging on the social media platform previously known as Twitter, now referred to as X. This marked Trump’s first appearance on the site in over two years, reigniting a digital presence that had been largely absent since his removal from traditional social media channels.
The former president made his grand comeback by posting a photograph of his mug shot, a symbolic move that coincided with the same day he surrendered to authorities in Georgia regarding a criminal case linked to his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Accompanying the mug shot were the bold phrases “ELECTION INTERFERENCE” and “NEVER SURRENDER!”.

In a strategic move to leverage his platform’s potential, Trump’s post also linked to a fundraising site on X, giving him the opportunity to raise campaign funds while capturing the attention of his extensive audience. Notably, the post was shared as Trump was in transit, flying from Atlanta to Newark, New Jersey.
This revival of Trump’s X presence stands in stark contrast to his absence after his last post on January 8, 2021, where he communicated his decision not to attend the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. His suspension from Twitter followed the January 6 Capitol riot, a consequential event that led to Trump losing his primary channel of communication.
During his presidency, Twitter had served as Trump’s virtual bulletin board, enabling him to lambast rivals, announce significant policy and personnel choices, and vent his grievances against media coverage. However, his involvement on the platform also played a role in the events leading up to the Capitol breach. He had used Twitter to rally support for the gathering that ultimately escalated into the riot, urging his followers to “Be there” and declaring, “Will be wild.”
The decision of when and how to reintegrate into social media platforms has occupied Trump and his advisors for months. In his post-presidential phase, Trump had resorted to Truth Social, a platform he established to communicate his messages. However, this platform garners significantly less attention compared to Twitter.
While on Twitter, Trump enjoyed a massive following of more than 86 million users, in contrast to his more modest following of over 6 million on Truth Social. Notably, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter last year, had reinstated Trump’s Twitter feed. Nevertheless, Trump had initially downplayed the notion of returning to the platform, only to break his silence and share his mug shot on Thursday night, making his presence felt once again on the digital stage.
