TALLAHASSEE — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who recently ended his presidential bid after finishing second in the Iowa caucuses, will join Republicans at next week’s National Convention in Milwaukee. However, he will not have a speaking slot on the main stage, according to sources familiar with the convention plans.

DeSantis’ Role at the Convention

Although DeSantis won’t be a main stage speaker, he will participate in several side events:

  • Town Hall: Hosted by Moms for Liberty.
  • Southern States Fest: At the Milwaukee Brewers’ stadium with other GOP governors.
  • Breakfast Meeting: Main speaker at an event hosted by the Republican Party of Florida.

DeSantis will also have floor access at the convention, as sitting governors and members of Congress are given passes.

Background and Political Dynamics

DeSantis, who initially rose to the governorship with Trump’s support in 2018, faced backlash from Trump and his team after deciding to run against the former president. Despite endorsing Trump after dropping out of the race in January, their relationship has remained complex, with a private meeting months later where DeSantis pledged to raise funds for Trump but did not request a convention speaking slot or a role in a potential Trump administration.

Future Prospects

DeSantis is seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election. However, his positioning could be impacted by Trump’s choice for vice president, particularly if Trump selects another Florida Republican, such as Senator Marco Rubio.

Other Notable Convention Details

  • Nikki Haley: Former United Nations Ambassador and 2024 primary rival, will not be speaking or attending the convention.
  • Jim Justice: West Virginia Governor and Senate nominee, will speak and will be accompanied by his 62-pound English bulldog, Babydog.

The convention will be a pivotal moment for Trump to consolidate support and for other Republicans to position themselves for future opportunities within the party.
