Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced plans to provide military support to Israel in response to Hamas’ attack, including drones, weapons, and ammunition. This move is part of his broader political agenda as he competes in the 2024 Republican primary. The state of Florida has dispatched cargo planes loaded with healthcare supplies, drones, body armor, and helmets. Additionally, the state collaborated with private organizations to fulfill Israel’s request for weapons and ammunition, although specific details about the quantity and types of weapons have not been disclosed by Jeremy Redfern, the governor’s office spokesperson.

Governor DeSantis has a history of utilizing his official powers to align with his political objectives. This includes using state funds to transport migrants and ordering the disbandment of a pro-Palestinian student group. In response to Hamas’ attack, Florida has also facilitated the evacuation of approximately 700 Americans from Israel.

The decision to provide military aid to Israel coincides with a gathering of GOP presidential contenders at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual event. DeSantis, along with other candidates, has expressed strong support for Israel and criticized President Joe Biden for what they perceive as inadequate backing of the Israeli government. It is unclear whether DeSantis coordinated the shipment of weapons with the Biden administration, as the Commerce Department oversees the export of various U.S. weapons and technology. However, there has been no immediate response from the White House’s National Security Council or the Commerce Department regarding this matter.
