In a significant move to address gun violence in the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris is set to lead a newly established federal office dedicated to gun violence prevention. This announcement comes as President Joe Biden prepares to formally introduce the office during a Rose Garden event, where key advocates and lawmakers have been invited.

A Critical Initiative

Vice President Harris, known for her active role in gun safety policy, will oversee the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The office’s director will be Stefanie Feldman, a longstanding aide to President Biden with over a decade of experience in gun policy.

Harris emphasized the pivotal role of this new office in executing President Biden’s and her own efforts to curtail violence within the constraints of the law. She highlighted the importance of engaging Congressional leaders, state and local authorities, and advocates to collaboratively build upon the progress made in saving lives. Her message to the American people is clear: the administration is committed to ending the gun violence epidemic, sparing no effort or time.

Leadership and Structure

Two prominent figures, Greg Jackson, the executive director of the Community Justice Action Fund, and Rob Wilcox, senior director for federal government affairs at Everytown for Gun Safety, will serve as deputy directors under Feldman.

For years, advocacy groups have urged the President to establish such an office. This move is seen as a significant step forward, especially considering the deadlock on gun safety legislation in Congress. The new office is expected to facilitate coordination on gun policy issues across the federal government while showcasing White House leadership on the matter.

A Call for Action

President Biden echoed the sentiment of countless families affected by gun violence, emphasizing the urgent need for action. He cited the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, signed last year, and his extensive executive actions aimed at community safety. However, he acknowledged that these steps are just the beginning of what is required to address the issue comprehensively.

Political Implications

The White House’s timing for this announcement is noteworthy, occurring as President Biden’s reelection campaign gathers momentum. It presents an opportunity to engage and energize young voters concerned about gun violence. This move complements other recent wins in areas such as climate and immigration advocacy.

Natalie Fall, Executive Director of March For Our Lives, applauded the creation of this office, highlighting the significant federal resources available to tackle gun violence effectively. This marks a turning point with substantial funding and evidence-based programs dedicated to addressing the root causes of gun violence. Coordination and advisement from this office are expected to streamline efforts and enable swift action.

As the nation grapples with the persistent issue of gun violence, this new federal office signifies a comprehensive approach to tackling the problem head-on.
