Content: SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Utah Governor Spencer Cox, who has long been a critic of former President Donald Trump, has publicly endorsed Trump for the 2024 presidential election following a recent assassination attempt on Trump’s life.
“I am doing everything I can to help and support him,” Cox said during a news conference. “We will still have lots of disagreements, I’m sure, and we’ll still do everything we can to help the state of Utah and help the Republican Party be successful.”
Cox’s endorsement came a day after Trump officially accepted the Republican nomination and nearly a week after he survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. In a private letter written the day after the shooting, Cox referred to the incident as a “miracle” and expressed his belief that Trump is the only one capable of unifying the country.
“Mr. President, I know we have some differences and you probably don’t like me much. And that’s OK. I get it. I am not writing this letter looking for a position in your Cabinet or a role on your team,” Cox wrote. “But I have loved so many of your policies … [and] I have told everyone that you are going to win the state of Utah and you are going to win the presidency again.”
This marks a significant shift for Cox, who has never voted for Trump and called on him to resign after the January 6 Capitol attack. In a recent interview with CNN, Cox stated that he was “not going to vote for either presidential candidate this year,” indicating his intention to write in a candidate as he had done previously.
Cox’s change of heart reflects a broader political realignment in the wake of the assassination attempt. While he still acknowledges his disagreements with Trump, Cox now emphasizes the importance of party unity and the need for strong leadership.
Despite his new endorsement, Cox maintains a middle-of-the-road approach and continues to advocate for the success of the Republican Party and the state of Utah. His wife and lieutenant governor have also been involved in supporting former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley’s leadership team.
