In a recent statement, Congressman Ro Khanna, a progressive representative from California, called for Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court to testify before Congress about ethics scandals affecting the court. Khanna argued that the justices are isolated and out of touch with the realities of everyday life, and he urged Roberts to testify for the sake of democracy. The Senate judiciary committee, under Democratic control, has requested Roberts’s testimony regarding allegations of relations between justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and right-wing donors. The justices involved have not disclosed these connections, though they deny any wrongdoing. Questions have also been raised about the professional activities of Roberts’s wife, Jane Sullivan Roberts, who has reportedly made millions by recruiting lawyers to law firms that have cases before the court.

The call for Chief Justice Roberts to testify comes amidst growing progressive dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decisions on issues such as abortion, affirmative action, student debt relief, and LGBTQ+ discrimination. The court, now dominated by a conservative majority following the appointment of three justices by former President Donald Trump, has faced criticism and declining public trust. Congressman Khanna believes that these controversies can mobilize and energize young people and working-class voters who are concerned about the court’s impact on their lives.

However, calls for reforming the Supreme Court, including changing its size or imposing term limits, face significant obstacles. Republicans control the House and have a narrow margin in the Senate, making it unlikely that such reforms would pass. Additionally, President Joe Biden is not in favor of major reform efforts. Congressman Khanna acknowledges the challenges of enacting reform but suggests that term limits and a judicial code of conduct could be more achievable goals.

While Khanna supports holding hearings on the ethics scandals, he does not endorse using a subpoena to compel Chief Justice Roberts’s testimony, unlike another prominent progressive House member, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Khanna believes that Roberts should voluntarily testify in the interest of democracy and the legitimacy of the court. However, it remains to be seen whether Chief Justice Roberts will comply with the request to testify.

In summary, Congressman Ro Khanna is calling for Chief Justice John Roberts to testify before Congress about ethics scandals surrounding the Supreme Court. He argues that the justices are out of touch and that their actions are undermining democracy. The Senate judiciary committee has requested Roberts’s testimony regarding alleged relations between justices and right-wing donors. Progressive dissatisfaction with the court’s decisions and a lack of public trust have fueled calls for reform. However, enacting significant changes to the court’s structure or composition faces considerable challenges. Khanna supports hearings on the ethics scandals but does not advocate for a subpoena, instead urging Roberts to testify voluntarily to uphold the legitimacy of the court and democracy.
