In a significant development, Ukrainian forces have launched an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, marking one of the most substantial Ukrainian offensives since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Ukrainian troops now control 28 settlements within the Kursk region, a move that has surprised many and created concerns in Moscow about the country’s border security.

Putin’s Response and Blame Game in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin held an operational meeting in response to the incursion, urging the military to “push and drive the enemy out of our territories.” He emphasized the need to ensure the security of Russia’s border regions, reflecting growing anxiety over Ukraine’s actions. Meanwhile, the situation has led to finger-pointing in Moscow, with officials and lawmakers criticizing the military’s preparedness and response.

Criticism of Russia’s Military Preparedness

One of the prominent voices of criticism, Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulev, questioned the effectiveness of the Russian military’s defense strategies. He pointed out the inadequacy of minefields without proper troop support and expressed disbelief that Russian forces were not better informed or prepared for the Ukrainian offensive. This criticism highlights the internal challenges faced by the Russian military amid ongoing conflicts.

Putin’s Concerns About Future Stability

President Putin expressed concerns that Ukraine would continue to destabilize Russia’s border regions, a sentiment that reflects the ongoing tension between the two countries. He also accused Ukraine, supported by Western allies, of trying to improve its negotiating position by attacking Russian civilians and threatening nuclear power plants. This situation continues to strain relations and poses risks of further escalation.
