Trump Advocates for Palestinian Resettlement in Jordan and Egypt, Drawing Widespread Criticism
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that Jordan and Egypt take in Palestinians displaced from Gaza as a result of the ongoing conflict with Israel. The suggestion has been met with firm rejection from Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, and apparent resistance from Jordanian officials.
When asked whether the proposal was a temporary or permanent solution, Trump stated on Saturday, “Could be either,” signaling openness to both possibilities. Gaza, a densely populated enclave and a key territory for a future Palestinian state, has been severely impacted by Israel’s military operations, with tens of thousands killed and a dire humanitarian situation unfolding.
Opposition from Arab Nations and Palestinian Leaders
Jordan and Egypt, both of which already host substantial Palestinian populations, have unequivocally rejected any plans to resettle additional Palestinians. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi reaffirmed the country’s “firm and unwavering” opposition to any displacement of Palestinians. Egypt has yet to comment on Trump’s latest remarks but has consistently opposed any forced migration of Palestinians.
Palestinian leaders have also expressed strong disapproval. Hamas spokesperson Basem Naim stated that Palestinians would not accept displacement under any guise, calling Trump’s proposal part of a broader effort to undermine Palestinian claims to Gaza. Sami Abu Zuhri, another Hamas official, urged Trump to abandon “failed ideas” attempted by previous administrations.
Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas similarly condemned the proposal. “Our people will remain steadfast and will not leave their homeland,” he said in a statement issued through the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.
Israel’s Mixed Reactions
The proposal has elicited divided opinions within Israel. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich expressed strong support, calling it “an excellent idea” and advocating for plans to implement it. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected similar proposals, distancing himself from Smotrich’s position.
While some Israelis view the idea as an opportunity to address Gaza’s challenges, others remain concerned about the ethical and political ramifications. Critics argue that such a move could further destabilize the region and undermine prospects for a two-state solution.
Humanitarian and Legal Concerns
International observers and rights groups have raised alarms over the potential for forced displacement. Francesca Albanese, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, condemned the proposal as “illegal, immoral, and irresponsible.”
Ethnic cleansing fears have been echoed by many within Gaza, where the majority of residents are internally displaced due to the ongoing conflict. Magdy Seidam, a Gaza resident, stated, “The Palestinian people firmly believe that this land is theirs. No matter how much destruction occurs, we will not leave.”
Historical and Geopolitical Context
Trump’s remarks come as Gaza faces one of its worst humanitarian crises in recent history. The enclave’s population, estimated at 2.3 million before the conflict, has endured mass displacement, widespread destruction, and severe shortages of essential resources.
The Gaza conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages. Israel’s retaliatory strikes have resulted in more than 47,000 deaths in Gaza, according to the enclave’s health ministry. A fragile ceasefire is currently in place, but the situation remains volatile.
Next Steps and Regional Implications
Trump’s comments come amid broader discussions about the future of Gaza and its governance. Israeli officials have indicated a desire to prevent Hamas from maintaining control of the enclave, while some international actors, including the United States and the United Nations, have called for humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts.
Despite the ceasefire, significant questions remain about Gaza’s future, the resettlement of displaced Palestinians, and the broader geopolitical implications for the region. Trump’s proposal adds a new layer of complexity to an already intricate and deeply entrenched conflict.
