Trump Responds to Backlash Over Papal AI Image

President Donald Trump publicly addressed the controversy surrounding an AI-generated image that portrayed him as the Pope, which had been posted on his Truth Social account last Friday. The image rapidly went viral, prompting reactions from both religious leaders and political figures across the globe.

At a Monday press conference, Trump claimed he only saw the image Sunday night and played down the backlash:

“I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was AI. But I know nothing about it. I just saw it last evening. Actually, my wife thought it was cute.”

Religious and Political Criticism

While some online followers viewed the image as humorous or symbolic, it drew sharp criticism from Catholic leaders.

  • Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, voiced concern.
  • The New York State Catholic Conference expressed dismay.
  • Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi condemned it as “an image that offends believers, insults institutions, and shows that the leader of the global right enjoys being a clown.”

Despite these responses, Trump dismissed their concerns, accusing the media of manufacturing outrage:

“You don’t mean the Catholics, you mean the fake news media … the Catholics loved it.”

Pope Francis’ Death and the Timing of the Image

The incident occurred shortly after the death of Pope Francis on April 21 (Easter Monday), during the official nine-day mourning period leading up to the papal conclave in Rome. This sensitive timing added to the controversy, as many Catholics were still grieving.

Humorous Tone and Deflection

Trump kept a light-hearted tone throughout the press conference, even joking about whether he could ever become Pope:

“Actually I would not be able to be married though. That would be a lot. I’d have to — to the best of my knowledge, popes aren’t big on getting married, are they? Not that we know of, no.”

He also humorously ruled out any papal aspirations, referencing his own previous joke that he would nominate himself if he could.

Conclusion and Public Perception

While the image stirred controversy among Catholic institutions, Trump’s base and many supporters appeared to view it through a light, humorous lens. The president used the moment to reinforce his recurring critique of the mainstream media and to maintain rapport with his audience through non-traditional communication tactics, including AI-generated content.
