U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday, describing him as a “very good person” who is doing a “very good job.” Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized his positive relationship with Starmer despite their ideological differences.
“He’s liberal, which is a bit different from me,” Trump said, “but I think he’s a very good person and I think he’s done a very good job thus far. He’s represented his country in terms of philosophy. I may not agree with his philosophy, but I have a very good relationship with him.”
Trump also confirmed plans for a call with Starmer within the next 24 hours, underscoring ongoing efforts to strengthen U.S.-U.K. ties.
Starmer’s Push for a U.S.-U.K. Trade Deal
Starmer, who has been vocal about his desire to enhance relations with the United States, told POLITICO in January that he aims to finalize a trade deal with the Trump administration. The Labour leader pledged to “take our partnership to the next level,” signaling optimism about future negotiations.
Elon Musk’s Controversial Criticism of Starmer
Trump’s remarks come amidst sharp criticism of Starmer from billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk. Earlier this month, Musk posted on his X platform (formerly Twitter), calling for Starmer to face imprisonment and accusing him of prioritizing certain social issues over others. Musk even ran a poll asking whether the U.S. should “liberate the people of Britain from their tyrannical government.”
Starmer has not directly addressed Musk’s comments, which some critics view as inflammatory and unfounded.
A Bipartisan Approach to Transatlantic Relations
Despite their differing political philosophies, Trump and Starmer appear committed to fostering a productive U.S.-U.K. relationship. As the two leaders prepare for their call, both nations may soon see movement toward deeper economic and strategic cooperation.
