Trump and Zelenskyy Hold First Meeting Since Oval Office Clash

On Saturday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met privately in Rome at St. Peter’s Basilica, marking their first encounter since their tense White House meeting in February. Zelenskyy described the discussion as “good,” while the White House called it “a very productive discussion.”

Leaders Discuss Ceasefire and Lasting Peace

Zelenskyy stated that the conversation focused on protecting civilians, achieving a full and unconditional ceasefire, and securing a reliable peace to prevent future conflicts. He emphasized the symbolic nature of the meeting, calling it a potential historic turning point.

Meeting Logistics and Future Talks

According to Zelenskyy’s spokesman Sergii Nykyforov, the meeting lasted about 15 minutes. Although both leaders hoped for a second meeting later the same day, scheduling constraints prevented it. However, both sides agreed to continue their dialogue, with teams working on arranging a follow-up meeting.

Other Leaders Join Discussions Briefly

At one point, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron joined Trump and Zelenskyy. Starmer and Macron have reportedly been trying to facilitate mediation between the U.S. and Ukraine.

Trump’s New Concerns Over Russia’s Actions

Following the meeting, Trump posted on social media questioning whether Russian President Vladimir Putin truly wants to end the Ukraine war. He criticized Russia’s recent missile strikes on civilian areas in Kyiv, which resulted in at least eight deaths, and suggested that the U.S. may impose additional sanctions if aggression continues.

Ceasefire Negotiations Progress, but Challenges Remain

Trump had previously stated that Ukraine and Russia were “very close to a deal” on a ceasefire, following negotiations involving his special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian officials. Despite optimism, Ukraine was notably absent from the recent Moscow talks.

Trump’s Comments on Crimea Stir Debate

In an interview with Time magazine, Trump asserted that Crimea would remain under Russian control, a position he claimed Zelenskyy and others recognized. Trump continues pushing for a peace agreement before reaching the end of his first 100 days back in office.

Pope Francis’ Funeral as a Diplomatic Hub

The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy took place ahead of the state funeral for Pope Francis, held at St. Peter’s Square. The event provided a rare opportunity for world leaders to hold informal meetings. Trump also briefly spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the gathering.
