Former President Donald Trump accused the FBI of not acting quickly enough on two assassination attempts, suggesting a potential Iranian connection. While no evidence supports his claim, Trump’s remarks reflect concerns about foreign threats against him amid growing tensions with Iran.
Trump Criticizes FBI Over Assassination Attempts
During a speech in North Carolina, Donald Trump accused the FBI of failing to investigate two recent assassination attempts against him with enough urgency. Trump specifically criticized the bureau’s inability to unlock the phones of the suspects involved in the Butler, Pennsylvania, and West Palm Beach, Florida, incidents. Despite the lack of official evidence, Trump suggested that Iran could be linked to these attacks.
Allegations of Iranian Involvement
Trump’s claims came a day after receiving a briefing from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. His campaign alleged that this briefing involved real threats from Iran to assassinate the former president. Trump’s remarks included a hypothetical response to Iran, in which he would threaten to destroy their largest cities if evidence of their involvement in these threats was found. Officials, however, have not confirmed any such foreign ties.
FBI and DOJ Criticism
In his speech, Trump also criticized the FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) for what he described as their focus on political opponents rather than acting on national security concerns. He claimed that under his leadership, federal agencies would have acted swiftly to address threats, contrasting the current response with that during his administration. Trump also raised concerns over the FBI’s capability to unlock the suspects’ devices, arguing they had done so during previous investigations but were struggling with this case.
Concerns Over U.N. Protection
Trump further criticized the U.S. government’s handling of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He questioned why the Iranian leader received substantial security protection while alleged Iranian threats against him were ongoing.
Campaign Response and Security Measures
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung released a statement Tuesday following the national security briefing. According to the campaign, intelligence officials warned of increasing threats against Trump in recent months. Cheung emphasized that law enforcement agencies are working across the board to ensure the former president’s safety and prevent foreign interference in the upcoming election.
