Teamsters Union to Meet with Kamala Harris Amid Internal Divisions on 2024 Endorsement

The Teamsters Union, a major labor group, is set to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris on September 16, 2024, as it deliberates endorsing a candidate in the presidential race. Despite traditionally supporting Democrats, internal divisions have arisen, particularly after the union’s president spoke at the Republican National Convention.

Teamsters Set to Meet with Harris

The Teamsters Union, which represents 1.3 million members, is preparing for a significant meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris on September 16, 2024. This meeting will influence the union’s endorsement in the upcoming presidential election, with Harris aiming to secure their support.

Internal Union Divisions

The union, historically aligned with the Democratic Party, is facing internal tension. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien, who has been critical of corporate hostility toward unions, spoke at the Republican National Convention earlier this year. While there, he complimented Donald Trump and refrained from criticizing the GOP’s labor policies, which some union leaders viewed as anti-worker.

Harris and Teamsters’ Previous Interactions

Harris and the Teamsters have been in talks since July, when the union first extended an invitation to meet. This comes after the union’s meeting with Trump in January as part of their vetting process for all presidential candidates. Despite her campaign receiving endorsements from other major unions, the Teamsters have yet to publicly support Harris.

O’Brien’s Controversial Statements

O’Brien’s appearance at the RNC upset many union members, especially after he praised Trump despite previous disagreements over labor issues. O’Brien has since accused Trump of “economic terrorism” for encouraging the firing of striking workers, complicating the union’s decision.

Political Landscape for Union Endorsements

While the Teamsters have typically endorsed Democratic candidates, many of its rank-and-file members supported Trump in 2016. This highlights a shift in political preferences within the labor force, creating uncertainty about where the union will cast its endorsement in 2024.
