Sen. Tommy Tuberville refuses to agree white nationalists are racist

“My opinion of a white nationalist, if someone wants to call them white nationalist, to me, is an American. It’s an American,” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) said in a TV interview Monday night.

Sen. Tuberville’s appearance on CNN last night paved the way for renewing the debate on white nationalists and their stance in the U.S army.

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) has faced criticism for his recent television interview where he refused to acknowledge that white nationalists are racists. During the interview on CNN, Tuberville was given the opportunity to clarify his previous remarks that seemed to support the idea of white nationalists serving in the military.

Tuberville rejected racism but disagreed with the host, Kaitlan Collins, when she stated that white nationalists are, by definition, racist because they believe in the superiority of their race. Tuberville dismissed this as Collins’ opinion and characterized white nationalists as individuals with “a few probably different beliefs.” His remarks drew strong criticism from Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), who called on Tuberville to apologize, emphasizing that white nationalism is inherently racist and dangerous.

This interview added to the controversy surrounding Tuberville, who has been in the news for stalling military nominations in an attempt to oppose a Defense Department policy on abortion access for service members and their families. Fellow Republicans were reluctant to defend Tuberville’s comments, with some emphasizing that there is no place for white nationalism in their party.

When asked about Tuberville’s remarks, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did not directly comment but stated that white supremacy is unacceptable in the military and the entire country. Tuberville had previously criticized Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s efforts to address white extremism and nationalism within the military, accusing Pentagon leaders of politicizing the armed services and driving away supporters of former President Donald Trump.

During the CNN interview, Collins pressed Tuberville on whether white nationalists should be allowed to serve in the military, offering a definition of a white nationalist as someone who believes in the superiority of the white race. Tuberville dismissed it as a matter of opinion and accused Democrats of using the term to push identity politics, which he believed was detrimental to the country. Collins reiterated that white nationalists hold horrific beliefs, but Tuberville insisted that it was just a name given to them and that he was against racism.

Critics, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, accused Tuberville of ignorance and defended the real definition of white nationalism provided by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center, which describes white nationalist groups as espousing white supremacist or white separatist ideologies.
