Iowa Senator Joni Ernst announced her support for Pete Hegseth as the next Defense Secretary, providing a significant boost to a nomination that faced skepticism just weeks ago.

During an interview with an Iowa radio station, Ernst revealed her decision, saying Hegseth satisfactorily addressed her concerns during his confirmation hearing before the Armed Services Committee.

Hegseth Tackles “Woke Issues”

Ernst praised Hegseth for his focus on addressing “woke issues” in the Pentagon, a stance she believes will enable the Department of Defense to move forward more effectively.

“He pointed out the woke issues at the Pentagon, and I think we’re at a point where now we can start moving forward. People know where he stands on these issues,” Ernst stated.

Addressing Past Controversies

Ernst’s support is particularly notable given her prior reservations about Hegseth’s controversial past comments. The former Fox News host had previously argued against women serving in combat roles, sparking widespread criticism. Additionally, there were allegations of sexual misconduct that raised further concerns.

At the confirmation hearing, Hegseth walked back his earlier statements, assuring Ernst and the committee that “women will have access to ground combat roles.” This reversal appeared to ease Ernst’s concerns, particularly as a combat veteran and a vocal advocate against sexual assault in the military.

Ernst’s Pivotal Vote

Ernst’s endorsement is a critical victory for Hegseth, as her vote was seen as pivotal in determining the outcome of his confirmation. Her support signals a shift toward uniting Republican lawmakers behind President Trump’s nominee.
