House Lawmakers Demand Briefing on Trump Assassination Attempt

Following a second assassination attempt on Donald Trump, key House lawmakers are demanding a briefing from the Secret Service. The attack occurred at Trump’s golf club in Florida, where shots were fired near the former president, though he was unharmed. Representatives Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and Jason Crow (D-Colo.), leading the investigation, requested a timely briefing from the Secret Service to discuss how security responded to the incident.

Task Force Expands Investigation Scope

A House task force, initially set up to investigate a July assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, may now expand its probe to include the latest incident. The task force, with a deadline for its findings by mid-December, aims to uncover security failures and prevent future attacks. Discussions are already underway about a broader investigation into Trump’s security arrangements and the potential for increased protective measures.

Security Concerns Mount

The July attack and the recent assassination attempt have raised alarm among lawmakers. Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) stressed that these incidents should not be treated as isolated and called for a swift investigation. He emphasized that domestic and foreign threats remain an ongoing concern. Congressional leaders are working closely with the Secret Service to understand what went wrong and how future incidents can be avoided.

Bipartisan Reactions to the Incident

Lawmakers from both parties have condemned the assassination attempt. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer applauded the Secret Service’s quick response, stressing that political violence has no place in the U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell echoed similar sentiments, expressing relief that Trump remained unharmed and calling for a thorough investigation. Both parties agree on the importance of preventing political violence.

Calls for Increased Security

Several lawmakers, particularly Republicans, have called for enhanced security measures for Trump. Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-N.Y.) urged President Biden to provide Trump with the same level of security as a sitting president, given the rising threats against him. Meanwhile, Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, expressed their concern but stopped short of demanding additional security measures, reiterating that violence has no place in a democratic society.
