Scholz and Trump Discuss Ukraine During EU Summit

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday while attending the European Council summit in Brussels. Both leaders emphasized the need for a “fair, just, and sustainable peace” in Ukraine, according to German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit. Scholz also reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense.

European Allies Preparing for Limited U.S. Support

The call took place against the backdrop of EU leaders discussing the bloc’s role in global affairs and preparing for reduced U.S. support for Ukraine under Trump’s presidency. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the summit, urging European allies to strengthen their defense commitments.

Zelenskyy acknowledged Trump’s return to the White House and expressed hope that Trump would contribute to ending the war. “Real guarantees” for Ukraine’s security, he noted, must come from NATO, including the U.S.

Second Recent Discussion Between Scholz and Trump

This marks the second call between Scholz and Trump in recent weeks. Following Trump’s reelection in November, the two leaders discussed similar themes, focusing on restoring peace in Europe and addressing the ongoing conflict. Scholz described the earlier conversation as “surprisingly” constructive.

Concerns Over Trump’s Stance on Ukraine

Trump’s imminent presidency has raised concerns about the future of U.S. involvement in Ukraine. Trump has suggested that Europe should assume greater responsibility in supporting Ukraine, both militarily and diplomatically.

European Unity and the Path Forward

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed similar sentiments in his recent call with Trump, stressing the importance of Western allies standing together on Ukraine. Despite uncertainties, European leaders are striving to maintain unity in their support for Kyiv.
