On Saturday, Russian guided bombs struck an apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulting in three fatalities and 29 injuries. This incident prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to appeal for increased support from Kyiv’s allies.

Images shared online depicted significant damage to the apartment building, including shattered windows, destroyed balconies, and debris scattered around a crater. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported three deaths and 29 injuries from the mid-afternoon attack. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov noted that two children were among the injured, with four individuals in serious condition.

“This Russian terror through guided bombs must be stopped and can be stopped,” Zelenskiy stated on Telegram. He called for decisive action from international partners to curb Russian military aviation and terrorism.

Governor Syniehubov confirmed that rescue operations were ongoing. Additional civilian targets were also struck, leading to the suspension of public transportation. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported four strikes in total.

Kharkiv, located approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Russian border, is a city of about 1.3 million residents and has been frequently targeted during nearly 28 months of conflict. Russia has increasingly relied on the use of guided bombs, which are relatively inexpensive, can be deployed from a distance, and pose fewer risks to its forces.
