Independent Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Seeks Alliance with Donald Trump

Potential Deal with Trump Administration

Independent U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reportedly considering a deal with former President Donald Trump, in which Kennedy would endorse Trump in exchange for a position within a potential Trump administration. This information was conveyed by Larry Sharpe, outreach director for American Values 2024, a super PAC supporting Kennedy, in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday.

Kennedy’s Upcoming Address in Arizona

Kennedy’s campaign announced that he will deliver an address to the nation on Friday in Arizona. During this address, Kennedy is expected to discuss “the present historical moment and his path forward.” According to reports, Kennedy is contemplating withdrawing from the presidential race and endorsing Trump. However, this endorsement appears contingent on Trump offering Kennedy and other members of his team roles within a future Trump administration.

Trump’s Response

In a recent interview with CNN, Trump indicated that he would be “certainly open” to the idea of Kennedy playing a role in his administration, should Kennedy decide to exit the race and offer his endorsement. Moreover, Kennedy is reportedly seeking assurances that his political movement could continue in some capacity, potentially including staying on the ballot in certain states.

Speculation and Campaign Developments

Earlier on Wednesday, ABC News reported, citing unnamed sources, that Kennedy plans to drop out of the race by the end of the week and formally endorse Trump. Kennedy’s campaign has not provided any comments on these developments.

Super PAC and Campaign Dynamics

The super PAC American Values 2024, which supports Kennedy, has raised over $50 million in his favor, according to Federal Election Commission filings as of June 30. It is important to note that while super PACs can raise unlimited funds for candidates, they are prohibited from direct coordination with the campaigns.

Running Mate’s Statements

Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s running mate, revealed in an interview with the Los Angeles-based media company Impact Theory on Tuesday that Kennedy was considering ending his campaign to align with Trump. She mentioned that Trump had previously expressed interest in their healthcare policies, making the prospect of a “unity party” worth exploring.

Background on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 70, is the son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy. He launched his presidential campaign as a Democrat, initially challenging incumbent President Joe Biden for the nomination. An environmental advocate with a history of spreading vaccine misinformation, Kennedy has struggled to secure a place on the ballot in many states. His support has recently declined, with a recent Ipsos poll indicating 4% support, down from 10% the previous month.
