Two months ago, the first assassination attempt on Donald Trump galvanized Republicans. Now, following a second potential attempt at Trump’s Florida golf course, GOP members are responding with a mix of defiance, outrage, and unsubstantiated blame against Democrats.
Trump Supporters Blame Democrats
While the motive behind the incident remains unclear, some Republicans were quick to connect the attempted shooting to Democratic rhetoric, accusing their opponents of inciting violence. Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) claimed that the narrative portraying Trump as a dictator contributed to the radicalization of individuals like the gunman. Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, warned ominously on social media that more attempts on Trump’s life could follow unless Republicans win in November.
However, Trump’s campaign did not suggest a motive for the suspect, and Trump himself called for “unity” and “peace” in a public statement.
Second Attempt Sparks Security Concerns
Sunday’s incident marked the second assassination attempt against Trump this year. The former president was not injured, but security concerns have intensified. The gunman, armed with an AK-47-style rifle, was stopped by Secret Service agents before he could fire at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course.
In contrast to the first attempt in July, which injured Trump and others at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, this latest incident did not result in any casualties. The earlier shooting left Trump bloodied but defiant, leading Republicans to rally around him with renewed energy. In that instance, Trump’s public image of defiance resonated deeply with his supporters. Sunday’s attempt lacked the dramatic visuals of the first, but the political fallout was just as intense.
GOP Outrage and Security Concerns
House Speaker Mike Johnson called the thwarting of this second assassination attempt an act of divine intervention, claiming, “God has spared his life twice now.” Johnson visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago after the incident, describing the former president as “strong and resilient.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state would open its own investigation into the incident, and Republican lawmakers have urged the Secret Service to further enhance security measures for Trump. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Sen. Lindsey Graham both called for additional resources to be directed toward Trump’s security.
Partisan Tensions Heighten
In the hours after the incident, while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed relief that Trump was unharmed and condemned political violence, partisan tensions reignited. Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) labeled Democrats’ rhetoric as “beyond evil,” accusing them of radicalizing individuals. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna echoed similar sentiments, blaming the “radical left” for promoting dangerous language that could lead to further violence.
Although Republicans had a comparable reaction after the first assassination attempt, the situation has become “supercharged,” according to GOP strategist Matthew Bartlett, with a more intense belief that they are running against forces willing to do anything to stop their political agenda.
