In the wake of the release of an unclassified FBI document detailing alleged bribery allegations involving President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, Republican politicians have reignited their efforts to impeach the president. The document, known as the FD-1023 form, was made public by Republican Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley and purports that the Bidens coerced the CEO of Ukrainian energy company Burisma into paying them millions of dollars in exchange for influencing the dismissal of a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating the firm.

For the duration of his Presidency, Biden has faced multiple efforts to impeach him, ranging from Covid-19 related actions to handling of illegal immigration and border issues to other allegations of misdemeanors, without these resolutions succeeding to pass through. Many Republicans in the House have spoken out after this incident, demanding impeachment once again.
And overall reactions from Republican representatives to the documents release have been fierce. Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana took to Twitter, branding the Bidens as “the most corrupt family to ever live in the White House” and demanding impeachment. Similarly, Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado called for Biden’s ousting, while others, like former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, accused the president of “extortion” and “treason” in addition to bribery.
President Biden’s defenders argue that these allegations have already undergone scrutiny in the past, including during the Trump administration, and have been found to lack credibility. White House spokesman Ian Sams criticized congressional Republicans for perpetuating claims that have been debunked previously, adding that they are indulging in “shameless, dishonest politics” that mislead both the public and the press.
Moreover, the bid for impeachment seems to lack support even within the Republican party. Representative Lisa McClain of Michigan vowed to hold Biden accountable through the House Oversight Committee, but other Republican lawmakers remain cautious about endorsing calls for impeachment without solid evidence.
The release of the FD-1023 form, a confidential human source (CHS) reporting document, has sparked debates about its credibility. The document includes information from a “highly credible” confidential source who claimed to have had multiple meetings with a top executive from Burisma, where Hunter Biden was a board member at the time. The Democrats argue argue that the document does not provide enough corroboration or additional evidence to justify impeachment proceedings.
